It is never just about the money.

Counteroffers may be tempting and gratifying, however, please consider the following:

  • “93% … leave either voluntarily or involuntarily” within 18 months of the counter offer (Career Profiles).

  • 89% of individuals who accept counter offers are gone within six months” (Career Profiles).

  • 50% of candidates that accept counter offers from their current employer are active again within 60 days.

  • Why were you originally open to leaving your current employer? Challenge, location, advancement, money, people, security? According to OfficeVibe, “39 percent of employees report they don’t feel appreciated at work”.

  • Why pay you now and not before?

  • Will your commitment and loyalty now be questioned? Will I miss out on advancement opportunities?

  • When times get financially tough, will your employer begin the cutbacks with you?

  • What type of a company do you work for if you have to threaten to resign before they give you what you are worth?

  • Is the counteroffer a maneuver to evade a short-term inconvenience by your employer?

  • Will you receive next year’s raise or bonus early?

  • Are you able to accept their offer, come back to work and thrive at the same company?

“Job counter offers are ways companies avoid the annoyances of losing employees at the wrong time.”
